ABOUT THIS TRIP

The Amphitheatre is probably the best known area of the entire Drakensberg. This trip offers you an opportunity to get into the mountain and spend some time there rather than just rushing up and down in a day.

START AND END

This is a circular trip that starts and endsd at Sentinel Car Park.

DISTANCES AND CHARACTER

Daily distances are short and the biggest elevation gain in a single day is 700m. Although a large part of the trip is off-trail, the going is not terribly hard. However, the trip does take place at 3000m so expect to be a bit short of breath.

DAY 1

We meet at the Sentinel Car Park in the early morning. After handing out group-use equipment and food packs we start our walk. The morning segment sees us climbing ±700m to the chain ladders and thence onto the escarpment. Timing (and weather) dependent we will try for lunch at Tugela Falls before trekking along the Khubedu River and up one of the side-valleys to our overnight camping spot.

What happens from here on depends on what you have requested as a trip...

ADD A DAY

By adding a day or two we can spend more time exploring. However, if you can manage 4 days then we strongly recommend the Mnweni Circuit instead.
