ABOUT THIS TRIP

We have included this trip specifically for the peak-baggers. It's a 3-day round trip that allows you to nab the peak of Champagne Castle (3377m A.S.L.).

The bulk of this trip takes place on trail, but there is a significant amount of effort involved.

Expect to see:

  • Spectacular terrain

  • Cape Vultures (and perhaps some rare bearded vultures)

START AND END
This is an end-to-end trip that starts at Witsieshoak and ends at Didima in the Cathedral Peak Valley.
DISTANCES AND CHARACTER
Athough the daily distances are short (12-25km most days), the trip is almost entirely off-trail and at altitude. This makes it quite a demanding trip and you had better be up for a challenge. Nights are spent either in tents or in caves (rock shelters), with some spectaculer views as rewards for the work.
Please familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions before booking.
DAY BEFORE
We meet at Monk's Cowl and settle in to our camp. The evening starts off with a briefing to provide an overview of the trip, followed by the allocation of group-use equipment and ending off with a kit check to ensure that everyone has the minimum required kit in their packs. An early night is called for so that we can have a nice, early start the following morning.
DAY 1
After an early breakfast we start walking, where the trek starts in earnest. The day is spent hiking up to Keith Bush camp at 2300m
DAY 2
This is a big day. We leave our base camp and take just day packs to tackle Gray's Pass on our way up to Champagne Castle. Having bagged our peak we return to our base camp at Keith Bush Camp that evening.
DAY 3
Our last day is a reverse of day 1. We should arrive back at the car park by 15h00.
