ABOUT THIS TRIP
The hidden treasure known as Eagle Gorge is the perfect introductory multi-day trek for those who want to discover the Drakensberg. The trip can be run over 3, 4 or 5 days, depending on your desires. As a summer trip it's great, offering several excellent swimming opportunities in magic little spots. The last night is spent sleeping in one of the great rock-shelters of the Little 'Berg - Stable Cave.
START AND END
This is a circular trip, starting and ending at the Monk's Cowl KZN Wildlife Station in the Champagne valley.
DISTANCES AND CHARACTER
Our longest distance that we cover in a single day is 15km, but for the most part the daily distances are around 12km per day, with elevation gains or losses of around 600m. The trip is entirely on-trail apart from one 300m section where the trail has disappeared through non-use (we told you it was a hidden treasure!)
Please familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions before booking.
DAY BEFORE
We meet at Monk's Cowl and settle in to our tents for the first night. The evening starts off with a briefing to provide an overview of the trip, followed by the allocation of group-use equipment and ending off with a kit check to ensure that everyone has the minimum required kit in their packs. An early night is called for so that we can have a nice, early start the following morning.
DAY 1
An early start sees us hiking up to the contour path at ±2000m. That's the hard part for the day done!
The remainder of the day sees us heading along the contour path to pitch camp close to a stream, having covered a distance of about 10km for the day.
DAY 2
Our second day is a short one - only 8 km and culminating near Arthur's Pool - one of the most amazing pools in the Drakensberg. Our camp-site is once again next to a stream.
DAY 3
The third day is our hardest, gaining approximately 600m of elevation over the course of about 10km of distance.
DAY 4
The fourth day is the home-run and is mostly down-hill. We return to Monk's Cowl in the mid afternoon before heading off our separate ways.
