ABOUT THIS TRIP

If you don't have a lot of time but you really, really want to experience the essence of the Drakensberg then this is your trip! The Mnweni is a primal place, with moods that speak to the soul.  The trip is hard work and you should not expect a breeze, but the rewards are abolutely out of this world.

Expect to see:

  • Incredibly primal scenery

  • Cape Vultures (and perhaps some rare bearded vultures)

  • Rural Zulu life with very few of the modern conveniences.

START AND END
This is a circular trip that starts and ends at the Amangwane Cultural Village in the Mnweni Valley.
DISTANCES AND CHARACTER
The daily distances vary between 17km and a mere 8km. The trip is mostly on-trail but some of the ascents and descents are steep and big! Overnight accommodation on the trail is tent and cave (rock shelter).
Please familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions before booking.
DAY BEFORE
We meet at Amangwane Cultural Centre and settle in to overnight accommodation. The evening starts off with a briefing to provide an overview of the trip, followed by the allocation of group-use equipment and ending off with a kit check to ensure that everyone has the minimum required kit in their packs. An early night is called for so that we can have a nice, early start the following morning.
DAY 1
After an early breakfast we start walking. The first 5 km is gravel road, after which we slip off onto the trail. The remainder of the day is spent on trail, gradually ascending from 1400m, where we started, to our overnight camp at 2000m. This is a long day.
DAY 2
Our second day ascends Mnweni Pass - over 900m of ascent in 2.1km of distance! The remainder of the day is spent hunting for the interesting sights before we settle down for the night in our cave.
DAY 3
On day 3 we start to descend Rockeries Pass. This steep descent will take us to our overnight camp at around 1800m.
DAY 4
The home-run on day 4 takes us back to the Amangwane Cultural Centre.

Personal hiking equipment (please contact us if you need to rent equipment)

Drinks or snacks not carried as part of the trek

Personal items such as souvenirs

SHORTEN BY A DAY
If you are pressed for time we can combine our last 2 days, but we will then only exit the mountain around 16h00.

SPEND MORE TIME AT ALTITUDE
Instead of descending Rockeries Pass we can choose to trek a little further south and descend Ntonjelane Pass instead. This will result in a big day on our last day, but will be well worth it

If you need to rent a tent, backpack or sleeping bag then please contact us.
