ABOUT THIS TRIP

Organ Pipes Pass is the quintessential Drakensberg Pass, and is (for many budding intrepid Drakensberg explorers) the first pass to be tackled. With a bit of guts it is possible to do the entire pass, from bottom to top, in a single day. The trip returns via Tlanyaku Pass - another spectacular pass.

By adding two additional days it is possible to extend the trip across the escarpment for another day, thus bagging Champagne Castle as an added extra, and then descend Gray's Pass instead.

Expect to see:

  • Beautiful vistas

START AND END
This is a circular trip that starts and ends at the Didima Camp in the Cathedral Peak Valley.
DISTANCES AND CHARACTER
The daily distances vary between 14km and a mere 10km. The trip is mostly on-trail but some of the ascents and descents are steep and big! Overnight accommodation on the trail is entirely in tents.
Please familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions before booking.
DAY BEFORE
We meet at Didima Centre and settle in to overnight accommodation. The evening starts off with a briefing to provide an overview of the trip, followed by the allocation of group-use equipment and ending off with a kit check to ensure that everyone has the minimum required kit in their packs. An early night is called for so that we can have a nice, early start the following morning.
DAY 1
After an early breakfast we start walking. This is a long day and we need to push hard. We will cover approximately 14km and will ascend 1400m in a day. Expect to arrive at camp shattered on night 1!.
DAY 2
Day 2 is significantly easier than day 1. We cover only a short distance to the top of Tlanyaku Pass.
DAY 3
Day 3 descends Tlanyaku Pass, giving us a complete change of scenery. We will end up camping very close to the base of Organ Pipes Pass proper this evening.
DAY 4
The home-run on day 4 takes us back to Didima Centre.

TAKE THINGS A LITTLE SLOWER
Whether you have doubts about your fitness or you just want to take a bit more time going up Organ Pipes Pass, it's all the same. We can add a day to the trip to accommodate your needs.

SPEND MORE TIME AT ALTITUDE
Instead of descending Tlanyaku Pass we can choose to trek a little further south and descend Grays Pass instead. This will require 2 more days to be tacked onto the trip but will allow us to tick off Champagne Castle as an added objective.
