ABOUT THIS TRIP

The Wolkberg Wilderness Area is 24,000ha of proper wilderness area. Only the northern quarter of the area has any semblence of gravel roads and, for the most part, paths are very rudimentary. The Serala Circult takes advantage of some of the few paths in existence and allows us to wander through the Wonderwoud - a completely natural indigenous forest.

Expect to see:

  • Views that go on for miles, alternating with

  • Dense indigenous forest.

START AND END
This is a circular trip that starts and ends at the alternate entrance to the Wolkberg Wilderness Area.
DISTANCES AND CHARACTER
The daily distances are short (< 12km most days) and the trip is mostly on-trail. In summer the heat and humidity can be challenging. Nights are spent in tents.
Please familiarise yourself with our Terms and Conditions before booking.
DAY BEFORE
We meet in the town of Haenertsburg and convoy in to the start of the trip - a journey that takes about an hour We will camp in tents next to the cars. NOTE that you will need a high-clearance vehicle to reach the start. With sufficient advanced warning it is possible to book a game-vehicle shuttle from the parks authorities.
DAY 1
After an early breakfast commence our walk. The first section is up an old forestry jeep track that takes us onto the Alpine Grasslands of Wolkberg. From there we head over to our overnight camping spot, taking a short detour to summit the peak of Serala (2050m) on the way.
DAY 2
Our second day takes us over Paul Kruger's Nose and down to the Wonderwoud. We will camp just before exiting the forest. This is a short day.
DAY 3
The return to the cars involves a few river crossings and one steep hill, but we should be back at the cars before 13h00, giving adequate time to get to your overnight destination.
