This course is aimed at people who take others sport climbing, either at indoor gymns or at their local crag. It does not provide all the training needed to become a rock climbing guide but does provide the technical skills required to supervise novices on single-pitch climbs.
We strongly recommend that you should already be a climber before starting this course.
You need to be fit enough to:
Climb a grade 16 sport route
Please note that assessment is NOT included in this course, nor is it included in the course costs. If you require assessment than you will need to arrange it as a separate event once you have consolidated the skills.
Before you are permitted to undertake assessment you must be over the age of 18 years old and must be in possession of a valid first-aid certificate. You must also have taken groups out climbing on at least 5 occasions and must have led at least 20 named (outdoor) bolted climbing routes.
The format for the assessment is:
A written theory exam of 100 marks. The pass mark is 60%
You must take a group of novices on a climbing outing. This includes the briefing and management of your group. You must be aware of safety-related infringements from any of your group, and must be able to solve any of the problems that the assessor creates for you as part of the scenario, within a reasonable time-frame.
