We're very serious about safety. We believe that safety is one aspect of training where you don't compromise. Because of this we have some very strict policies relating to safety. Most of these policies stem from the need to be able to anticipate emergency conditions before they arise as well as having the physical and mental reserves to cope with any potential problem that may arise. Undertakings

The School For Mountain Leadership undertakes the following:
  • Never to exceed a ratio of 10 students / instructor (or clients / guide) when mountain walking.


  • Never to exceed a ratio of 6 students / instructor (or clients / guide) when abseiling in mountains.


  • Never to exceed a ratio of 5 students / instructor (or clients / guide) when canyoning (kloofing).


  • Never to exceed a ratio of 4 students / instructor (or clients / guide) when single-pitch rock climbing.


  • Never to exceed a ratio of 2 students / instructor (or clients / guide) when multi-pitch rock climbing.


  • To have at least one instructor/guide with a level 5 or higher medical qualification in the mountains.


  • Never to take students into mountain areas the instructors have not previously been to.


  • Never to take students climbing on a route the instructors have not climbed before.


  • To that ensure every person has their own harness and helmet when climbing, abseiling or kloofing.
