Activity   Walking, hiking and trekking
Description  Assessment of skills for MDT Advanced Mountain Walking Leader and/or SAQA 9288: Plan and provide a guided mountain walking experience.

Candidates are assessed for competence in terms of the MDT`s Advanced Mountain Wlaking Leader scheme and the NQF`s SAQA 9288: Plan and provide a guided mountain walking experience

Prerequisites: Candidates for this assessment MUST read and understand the MDT and NQF standards and ensure that they are able to perform the skills as ALL skills WILL be assessed.

Candidates must also be in possession of a minimum of a level II first-aid certificate.

Format: Candidates will do the following:
  • Sit a written test. Oral tests can be arranged for people with problems.
  • Plan, organise and execute a trip of not less than 4 days to an altitude of >2400m taking the following into account:
    • Plan, organise and manage all logistics pertaining to a Mountain Walking experience.
    • Lead, organise and manage a group in a wide range of conditions.
  • Demonstrate a high level of mountain craft.
  • Choose and select appropriate equipment to suit various conditions.
  • Navigate accurately in an unmarked and unknown area in all weather conditions.

  • Co-ordinate and implement limited emergency rescue procedures.
  • Finally, for those doing the SAQA 9288 course you will be required to submit an assignment.
